Summary
The Multimedia LessonBuilder enables foreign language instructors
to create pedagogically-rich online course materials.
Using very simple steps, this tool builds fully independent, web-delivered
lessons that include one or more of the following:
- Multimedia elements (video, audio)
- Welcome and exit pages clearly
outlining learning goals and next steps
- Activities, such as multiple
choice, matching, short answer, and essay
- Multimedia Annotator,
an interactive media player providing help
These lessons can stand alone or can be used within course management
systems.
Technical
The Multimedia LessonBuilder uses XML specs from IMS (content
packaging and QTI) as an internal data model. XML-RPC is used to
communicate between the Flash client and the Java server. This tool
runs on OSX and Microsoft Windows and likely works on machines running
Linux. The tool requires Macromedia Flash Player 7 for operation.
HTML lessons are generated using XSL to process the XML. Javascript
allows for sophisticated question/response/feedback. Unicode data
is utilized throughout, with Unicode Flash-based text input.
